Dear Parents,

Due to the confirmation of a Hort staff member who has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, the Gesundheitsamt has ordered the Hort to close. Considering the large number of Elementary School students enrolled in the Hort, the Elementary School will close as of Thursday, March 12, 2020, until Tuesday, March 17, 2020. The Elementary School and Hort will reopen on Wednesday, March 18, 2020.

All events such as concerts and parent nights are canceled until further notice. Late Birds and all after school and extra-curricular activities which take place on campus via, for example, the JFK Friendship Center and the JFK Sports Club are also canceled until Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

The Gesundheitsamt has ordered quarantine for the following:
 All children enrolled in the Hort program
 All Entrance Class students
 All Entrance Class teachers
 All Hort Erzieher

The High School remains open and in session until further notice. If as a family you decide to keep your High School student at home as well, we respect your decision. 

You will continue to receive the most up-to-date information via email and on the JFKS website www.jfks.de. 

The JFKS Administration remains in contact with the Gesundheitsamt Steglitz-Zehlendorf to continue to monitor the situation at JFKS. Please be mindful that we will not be able to answer individual emails or phone calls as we are keeping the lines free for the authorities to contact us.

While this decision may seem drastic, there is no reason for fear. Please address health concerns with medical professionals – your pediatrician, your local Gesundheitsamt, the website (link here) and hotline of the Senatsschulverwaltung. The JFKS Administration are not medical professionals and cannot advise you regarding health questions.

Lastly, please help to stop rumors. It is important for our children and our community that we handle this information calmly and reasonably.

aufgrund der Bestätigung, dass ein Hort-Erzieher positiv auf COVID-19 getestet worden ist, hat das Gesundheitsamt die Schließung des Horts angeordnet. Aufgrund der hohen Anzahl der Grundschüler, die im Hort angemeldet sind, wird die Grundschule ab Donnerstag, den 12.03.2020 bis Dienstag, den 17.03.2020 schließen. Die Grundschule und der Hort werden am Mittwoch, den 18.03.2020 wieder öffnen.

Alle Veranstaltungen wie zum Beispiel Konzerte und Elternabende sind bis auf Weiteres abgesagt. Late Birds, JKFS-Aktivitäten sowie Aktivitäten des JFK Friendship Centers sowie des JFK Sport Clubs sind bis auf Weiteres ebenso bis zum 17.03.2020 abgesagt.

Das Gesundheitsamt hat Quarantäne angeordnet für:

Die High School bleibt bis auf Weiteres geöffnet. Sollten Sie als Familie entscheiden, Ihren High School Schüler zu Hause zu behalten, respektieren wir diese Entscheidung. Sie werden stets die aktuellsten Informationen per E-Mail erhalten und auf der Webseite www.jfks.de finden.

Wir stehen im ständigen Kontakt mit dem Gesundheitsamt Steglitz-Zehlendorf, um die Situation an der JFKS zu bewerten. Beachten Sie bitten, dass wir nicht in der Lage sind, individuelle Anfragen per Telefon oder E-Mail zu beantworten, damit die Kommunikation mit den Behörden aufrecht erhalten werden kann.

Bright skies provided a dry autobahn ride that carried 130 excited students toward their Austrian destiny with one odd quirk: a crack at academia. Based on a challenge delivered from Bus 2 and Mr. Lang, both buses battled in poetic counter play at the second rest stop – atop picnic benches and surrounded by poetry fans and supporters. After a decisive round one victory for Bus 1, the third rest stop action turned to the McDonald’s playground and, much akin to the rumble in West Side Story, poetic jabs worthy of Shakespeare shaped this literary rivalry. We reveled in the creative efforts of your children and the challenge contributed to the camaraderie of the trip on the whole.

Once students hit the slopes on Monday, a rather challenging day was had by all.  Advanced skiers had to climb up a respectable slope and ski down to demonstrate their skills, to be placed in the correct ability level skiing group.  Meanwhile, beginning skiers had to learn to carry, walk in, and turn these awkward, heavy boards suddenly strapped to their feet.  Most students ate well, and then slept well, after this active first day, particularly after the many options provided by 8F for their game night.  Stay tuned for more challenges and accomplishments ahead!

Dear 8th Grade Parents,

After yesterday’s information from the health department, a phone call with the “Schulaufsicht” and checking the travel advice from the Federal Foreign Office, we decided that the ski-trip would take place. Nevertheless, we would once again like to expressly point out the measures already announced on Wednesday.

1. Please monitor your child’s state of health with special care. In the event of health problems, especially fever, you should refrain from your child’s participation. After the causes have been clarified, a later arrival is possible.
2. In the past few years, febrile colds have repeatedly occurred on the ski trip. Please discuss with your child the need to remain calm in the event of the illness of classmates who are accommodated in the same room and to immediately inform the teachers of the first symptoms of the illness at the meetings that take place twice a day.
3. Please remind your child of the prevention options already communicated in order to minimize the risks of any kind of infection.
4. The accompanying teachers will regularly point out the preventive measures.

We now wish all 8th graders a carefree journey and lots of fun!

Liebe Eltern der Schülerinnen und Schüler des 8. Jahrgangs,

nach der gestrigen Mitteilung vom Gesundheitsamt, Gesprächen mit der Schulaufsicht und aufgrund der Reisehinweise des Auswärtigen Amtes haben wir beschlossen, dass die Skifahrt stattfinden wird. Trotzdem möchten wir noch einmal ausdrücklich auf die bereits am Mittwoch mitgeteilten Maßnahmen hinweisen.

1. Bitte beobachten Sie mit besonderer Sorgfalt den Gesundheitszustand Ihres Kindes. Im Falle gesundheitlicher Probleme, insbesondere auftretendem Fieber, sollten Sie von einer Teilnahme Ihres Kindes zunächst absehen. Nach Abklärung der Ursachen ist eine spätere Nachreise durchaus möglich.
2. Auf der Skireise traten in den vergangenen Jahren immer wieder auch fieberhafte Erkältungskrankheiten auf. Bitte besprechen Sie mit Ihrem Kind die Notwendigkeit, im Falle der Erkrankung von Mitschüler(innen), die im selben Zimmer untergebracht sind, Ruhe zu bewahren und erste Krankheitssymptome den Lehrerinnen und Lehrern bei den zweimal täglich stattfindenden Besprechungen umgehend mitzuteilen.
3. Bitte weisen Sie Ihr Kind nochmals nachdrücklich auf die bereits mitgeteilten Präventionsmöglichkeiten hin, um die Risiken für Ansteckungen jeglicher Art zu minimieren.
4. Die begleitenden Lehrkräfte werden regelmäßig auf die Präventionsmaßnahmen hinweisen.

Wir wünschen jetzt allen 8.-Klässler(innen) eine sorgenfreie Reise und allen viel Spaß!

Dear parents, 

We would like to inform you about the contact of a JFKS staff member, a student, and a parent with people outside of the JFKS community who are classified as suspected cases of COVID-19 virus.

The JFKS staff member, student and parent have all been placed under preventative quarantine at home by the Berlin Health Authority (Gesundheitsamt Steglitz-Zehlendorf) and are being regularly tested by the Gesundheitsamt. As of today, all of these individuals have tested negative for COVID-19 and have not developed symptoms. We ask for your understanding that out of respect for the privacy of our staff member, student and parent, we are not able to give you more information than the Gesundheitsamt deems necessary.

This information reached us after school hours last night and this morning. JFKS is in constant contact with the Senat School Authority (Senatsschulverwaltung) and Gesundheitsamt to monitor the situation at JFKS. The Gesundheitsamt decided this morning that there is no reason to close JFKS at this time. We are sharing this with you in an effort to be as transparent as possible.

Should the situation at JFKS change, you will continue to find the most up-to-date information on the front page of the JFKS website (link here). We will also send an email via this email address. We are making decisions about canceling school events and trips based on the information available to us. We will notify those involved as soon as possible should an event or trip need to be canceled.

In the meantime, JFKS policy regarding illness and absence remains unchanged. Regulations regarding compulsory education (Schulpflicht) also remain in effect.

Please address health concerns with medical professionals – your pediatrician, your local Gesundheitsamt, or consult the website of the Senatsschulverwaltung (link here) if you have questions about the health of your child(ren) or yourself. JFKS has no medical staff and we cannot advise you regarding health questions.

Lastly, please help to stop rumors. It is important for our children and our community that we handle this information calmly and reasonably. The JFKS staff and teachers are conducting school as usual and are busy with our daily tasks and routines. Please understand that we are not able to process an increased volume of phone calls and emails.
