The JFKS Equity Steering Committee presents Becoming Black as the next film in the community Film & Discussion series. Becoming Black tells the story of Ines Johnson-Spain’s childhood in the GDR/DDR and her experiences as a biracial child. Ms. Johnson-Spain will participate in the virtual discussion and Q&A.

Here is a short summary of the film from the ZDF Mediathek:
“Becoming Black” is an intimate portrait of a difficult childhood in a culture of silence and denial. The film illustrates what happens when the non-fitting suddenly becomes visible in a normative environment.
In search of her biological father, the director also sets off on a journey to Africa, where she meets her large Togolese family. Thus, the film develops into a reflection on belonging, social norms, family concepts and systemic racism.

“Becoming Black” ist das intime Porträt einer schwierigen Kindheit in einer Kultur des Schweigens und der Verleugnung. Der Film verdeutlicht, was passiert, wenn das nicht-passende in einem normierten Umfeld plötzlich sichtbar wird.
Auf der Suche nach ihrem leiblichen Vater bricht die Regisseurin auch zu einer Reise nach Afrika auf, wo sie ihre große togolesische Familie kennenlernt. So entwickelt sich der Film zu einer Reflexion über Zugehörigkeit, soziale Normen, Familienkonzepte und systemischen Rassismus.
