Abitur 2020 – Geschafft!

Herzlichen Glückwunsch!

Die Abiturprüfungen des Jahres 2020 wurden diese Woche mit den 5. PK Präsentationen beendet. Alle zur Prüfung zugelassenen Schülerinnen und Schüler haben das Abitur bestanden!

Glückwunsch an alle Abiturienten, die dieses Jahr top-vorbereitet waren und das in den Prüfungen auch umgesetzt haben.

Großer Dank gilt auch den Lehrkräften für den reibungslosen Ablauf aller Kurse, die Vorbereitungen und die eigentlichen Prüfungen. Unter den Umständen, unter denen wir das Abitur diesmal durchführen mussten, war es noch bedeutsamer als sonst, dass wir uns in allen (Not)Lagen auf die Flexibilität und Professionalität aller am Abitur Beteiligten verlassen konnten.

Response to Current Events in the United States

As parents and educators we collectively carry the responsibility of responding with honesty, compassion and conviction as our children and students witness history in real time, as they have this past week. It is more important than ever to have effective communication with our students through engagement in conversations that may not be comfortable or easy to have. We would, therefore, like to share some resources for entering into conversations with your children, our students, around the topic of racial inequality (see below). As a school we are committed to equipping our staff with the tools and resources needed to facilitate continued conversation in the classroom.

In 1960 when the John F. Kennedy school was founded, the school represented the platform on which a bridge of friendship and community was built among the German and American cultures. The cornerstone of our school is to provide conversation and learning about cultures for new generations of youth. Regardless of background, it is difficult to process the recent events. Many in our community are experiencing waves of emotion and shock in the aftermath of the George Floyd murder by a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota and the resulting social outcries.

These topics are complex. However, our founding principles mandate that we address them and guide our students through them according to our mission and the tenants of Berlin School law. The diversity and experiences our students, faculty and staff bring to the community are part of what can enable our students to be change-agents as they go out into the world. Through their ability to respectfully and emotively engage in conversation, they and we can lead social justice down a new path.

We hope that parents and teachers will use this opportunity to respond to and initiate important conversations about race and racism, and hope that the resources we (a group of JFKS counselors and teachers) have provided are helpful.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to the counseling team for support in navigating these topics with your children.

Together we can contribute to creating a fairer and more just society, beginning in our own homes and school community.

JFKS Latest Update (03.06.)

Erinnerung an die Eltern Aufgrund unserer Covid-19-Sicherheits- und Hygienevorschriften dürfen Eltern den Campus nicht betreten, mit Ausnahme des “Materialabholbereichs” im Foyer der Grundschule. Wir möchten Sie freundlich daran erinnern, Ihre Kinder am Tor zu verabschieden und den Campus nicht zu betreten, es sei denn, Sie haben einen geplanten Termin. Dies sind höchst ungewöhnliche Zeiten, und wir versuchen, die Anzahl der Personen zu begrenzen, mit denen unsere Lehrer, Mitarbeiter und Schüler und Schülerinnen auf dem Campus in Kontakt kommen. Darüber hinaus sind wir verpflichtet, detaillierte Aufzeichnungen darüber zu führen, wer sich wann und wo auf dem Campus aufhält. Reminder to Parents Due to our Covid-19 Safety and Hygiene Regulations, parents are not allowed on campus with the exception of the ‘Material Pickup Area’ in the elementary school foyer. We kindly remind you to say goodbye to your children at the gate and to not enter the campus, unless you have a scheduled appointment. These are most unusual times and we are trying to limit the number of people our teachers, staff and students on campus come into contact with. Additionally, we are required to keep detailed records of who is on campus, when and where. Our stricter safety regulations remain in place for the duration of this school year. Please be aware that this has not changed.
Die letzten Tage des Schuljahres – Grundschule Wir sind dabei, die Planung für die letzten Schultage des Semesters abzuschließen und die Einzelheiten der Zeugnisverteilung sowie die Brückenzeremonie für unsere Sechstklässler festzulegen. Familien mit Kindern / Familienmitgliedern in einer Risikogruppe, die mit einem ärztlichen Attest zu Hause geblieben sind: Das Zeugnis Ihres Kindes wird am 2. Juli (Donnerstag) und 3. Juli (Freitag) von 9.00-11.00 Uhr im Büro der ES zur Abholung bereit liegen. Alternativ können die Eltern eine individuelle Abholzeit mit dem Klassenlehrer des Kindes vereinbaren.	Last Days of the School Year – Elementary School We are in the process of finalizing our last few days of school and the details of report card distribution, as well as the bridge ceremony for our 6th graders. Families with at-risk students / family members who have stayed home with a doctor’s note: Your child’s report card will be available for pickup on July 2 (Thursday) and July 3 (Friday) from 9:00-11:00 in the ES Office. Alternatively, parents may schedule an individual pickup time with the child’s homeroom teacher.
Sommerschule Der Senat hat Informationen über das Programm der Sommerschule auf der Webseite des Senats veröffentlicht. Mit der Sommerschule 2020 sollen Lernnachteile ausgeglichen werden, die bei Schülerinnen und Schülern beim Lernen zuhause während der Schulschließungen entstanden sind. Die Sommerschule ist ein Angebot für Schülerinnen und Schüler, die im Schuljahr 2019/2020 die Jahrgangsstufe 1, 2, 7, 8 oder 9 besuchen. Der Senat hat Anmeldeformulare veröffentlicht, die hier in deutscher und englischer Sprache zur Verfügung stehen. Die ausgefüllten Anmeldeformulare müssen bis zum 12. Juni 2020 im Sekretariat der Grund- oder Oberschule eingereicht werden. Bitte besuchen Sie die Webseite des Senats für weitere Informationen. Leider können die Schulverwaltung und die Lehrerinnen und Lehrer keine Fragen beantworten, da dieses Programm vom Senat koordiniert und durchgeführt wird. Bitte beachten Sie, dass die JFKS-Lehrkräfte diese Klassen nicht unterrichten werden. Sollte die Nachfrage nicht ausreichen, ist es auch möglich, dass angemeldete Schülerinnen und Schüler den Unterricht an einer anderen Schule und nicht an der JFKS besuchen.	Summer School The Senat has published information regarding the summer school program on the Senat website. The Summer School 2020 is intended to compensate for learning disadvantages that students have suffered when learning at home during school closures. The summer school is an offer for students who are attending grade 1, 2, 7, 8 or 9 in the school year 2019/2020. The Senat has published registration forms which are available here in German and English. Completed registration forms must be submitted to the HS or ES office by June 12, 2020. Please visit the Senat website for more information. Unfortunately, the school administration and teachers are unable to answer questions, as this program is coordinated and implemented by the Senat. Please note that JFKS teachers will not teach these classes. If there is not enough demand, it is also possible that registered students will attend classes at a different school, not at JFKS.

Rückkehr der Klassenstufen 2 und 3 Die Rückkehr der Zweit- und Drittklässler ist reibungslos verlaufen. Es gab keine Probleme, und es war toll, wie glücklich Lehrer und Schüler waren, sich wiederzusehen!	Return of Grade 2 and 3 The return of the 2nd and 3rd graders has gone smoothly. There have been no issues and it was exciting to witness how happy the teachers and students were to see each other again!
Vielen Dank an die Eltern! Wir möchten Ihnen danken, dass Sie für die Grundschule Sprühflaschen zur Verfügung gestellt haben. Sie wurden bereits mit Desinfektionsspray gefüllt und werden in allen Klassenräumen verteilt, damit die Tische schnell und regelmäßig gereinigt werden können.	Thank You, Parents! We would like to thank you for providing spray bottles for the Elementary School which have been filled with disinfectant spray for all classrooms to ensure tables can be cleaned quickly and regularly.

Update zum Ausräumen der Locker Alle Schülerinnen und Schüler haben einen Zeitplan für die Ausräumung ihrer Habseligkeiten erhalten. Rückgabeverfahren für Instrumente der 5. Klasse Liebe Eltern der 5. Klassen, Es ist leider die Zeit des Jahres, die schuleigenen Instrumente zurückzugeben, die Ihre Kinder für Band und Orchester benutzt haben. Die Instrumente müssen in der nächsten Woche zurückgegeben werden, wenn die 5. Klassen vom 2. bis 5. Juni wieder auf dem Campus sind. Alle Schülerinnen und Schüler sollten ihr Instrument in die Schule mitbringen, damit sie es während dieser Woche abgeben können! Bevor das Instrument zurückgeben wird, lassen Sie bitte Ihr Kind alle Habseligkeiten wie Blätter, Bleistifte, Notenblätter usw. aus der Tasche nehmen. Das Band- oder Orchesterbuch gehört Ihnen, Sie brauchen es nicht zurückzugeben. Das Rückgabeverfahren läuft wie folgt ab: –Die Schülerinnen und Schüler treffen zu Beginn ihres Schultages ein und stellen sich draußen auf den Punkten auf. –Die Musiklehrer warten draußen auf die Schüler. –Wenn die Schülerinnen und Schüler ankommen und sich in einer Reihe aufstellen, holen wir die Instrumente bei den Schülerinnen und Schülern ab, überprüfen, ob alle Teile des Instruments zurückgegeben wurden und ob die Inventarnummer mit unseren Aufzeichnungen übereinstimmt. Alle Teile des Instruments sollten sich in dem Koffer befinden: –Flöte: Putzstock –Klarinette/Saxophon: Mundstück und Ligatur –Blechblasinstrumente: Mundstück –Perkussion: Übungsblock und Trommelstöcke –Geige/Viola: Schulterstütze und Bogen –Cello/Bass: Bogen –Die Schüler gehen wie gewohnt in die Schule ohne ihr Instrument, sobald es eingecheckt ist. In den nächsten Wochen werden wir weitere Informationen über Band und Orchester in der 6. Klasse verschicken! Es war ein Vergnügen, diese hart arbeitenden Schülerinnen und Schüler zu unterrichten! Wir sind so traurig, dass das Frühjahrskonzert abgesagt wurde und dass wir in diesem Schuljahr nicht mehr mit den Ensembles proben können. Wir hoffen, viele der Schüler nächstes Jahr in der Band und im Orchester der 6. Klasse zu sehen! Herzliche Grüße, Miss Epping & Mrs. Jaques	5th Grade Instrument Return Procedures Dear 5th Grade Parents, It is unfortunately the time of year to return the school owned instruments that your student’s have been using for beginning band and orchestra. The instruments need to be returned during the next week that 5th grade is on campus for school, June 2-5. Student’s should all bring their instrument to school with them to turn in during this week! Before returning the instrument, please have your student remove all of their belongings such as reeds, pencils, sheet music, etc. from the case. The band or orchestra book is theirs to keep, we do not need it back. The return procedure will go as follows: –Students arrive for the beginning of their school day and line up on the dots outside. –Instrumental music teachers are waiting outside for students. –As students arrive and line up, we collect instruments from students, check that all parts of the instrument are returned, and that the inventory number matches our records. All parts of the instrument should be in the case including: –Flute: cleaning rod –Clarinet/saxophone: mouthpiece and ligature –Brass instruments: mouthpiece –Percussion: practice pad and drumsticks –Violin/viola: shoulder rest and bow –Cello/bass: bow –Students proceed into school as usual, leaving their instrument once it has been checked in. In the next few weeks, we will be sending out more information about band and orchestra in 6th grade, stay tuned! It has been a pleasure teaching these hard-working students! We are so sad that the spring concert was canceled and that we won’t be able to rehearse with the ensembles again this school year. JFKS Latest Update (20.05.)

Rückkehr der 4. Klassen und Eingangklassen In dieser Woche sind die 4. Klässler und die Eingangsklassen zurück in die Schule gekehrt. Nach kleinen Unsicherheiten am ersten Tag, verlief auch hier alles reibungslos. Alle hielten sich sehr diszipliniert und verständig an die Abstandsregeln und Hygienemaßnahmen. Wir freuen uns in der nächsten Woche ab Dienstag die 2. und 3. Klassen zu begrüßen. Damit sind alle Schulklassen zumindest vorübergehend wieder in den Schulbetrieb eingestiegen.	Return of the 4th graders and Entrance Classes This week the 4th graders and the entrance class students have returned to school. After small uncertainties on the first day, everything went smoothly here as well. Everyone kept very disciplined and understood the rules of distance and hygiene. We are looking forward to welcoming the 2nd and 3rd classes next week starting on Tuesday. So all classes have at least temporarily returned to school.
Grundschule – Mittagessen In dieser Woche gab es täglich warmes Mittagessen für die Grundschüler/innen in einer Gabelbox. Toll, dass so viele Kinder daran gedacht haben, Gabeln von zu Hause mitzubringen, um Plastikmüll zu vermeiden! Danke!	ES – Lunches This week we had a daily warm lunch for the ES students in a to-go-box. It was great to see that many children remembered to bring forks from home to avoid plastic waste! Thank you!
Nachricht an die 12. Klasse Wir möchten Ihnen ein Update zur Graduation 2020 geben. Zunächst möchten wir darauf hinweisen, dass wir alles tun, was wir unter den gegebenen Umständen tun können, um Ihnen einen denkwürdigen Abschluss Ihrer akademischen Jahre an der JFKS zu ermöglichen. Unsere Community hat sich kontinuierlich an diese einzigartige Situation in der wir uns befinden angepasst, und uns mit ihrer Flexibilität, Belastbarkeit und Tatkraft stolz gemacht. So oder so, auf die eine oder andere Art und Weise wird Ihr Schulabschluss gefeiert werden! Wenn es die Umstände erlauben, werden wir unsere Veranstaltung für die Abschlussklasse 2020 hier an der JFKS abhalten. Familie und Freunde werden nicht teilnehmen können. Stattdessen werden wir entweder einen Live-Stream oder genügend Bilder und Videos von der Veranstaltung zur Verfügung stellen, damit die Gäste das Gefühl haben, dass sie teilgenommen haben. Falls eine Zusammenkunft der Abschlussklasse an der JFKS überhaupt nicht möglich sein sollte, werden wir uns mit Ihnen wegen des Zeugnisses und der Abholung des Diploms/Abi in Verbindung setzen. In jedem Fall erstellen das Graduation-Komitee und andere Freiwillige ein Video für die Graduating Class of 2020. One way or another, some form of celebrating your Graduation will happen! If circumstances allow, we will hold our event for the Class of 2020 here at JFKS. Family and friends will not be able to attend. Instead, we will either have a live stream or enough pictures and videos from the event for guests to feel like they attended. If a physical gathering of the graduating class is not at all possible at JFKS, we will be in contact with you about the report card and Diploma/Abi pick up. In any case, the Graduation Committee and other volunteers are creating a Graduating Class of 2020 compilation video. Nachricht von der Grundschul-Bücherei Nur eine freundliche Erinnerung an die Buchausleihe und Buchrückgabe. Ressourcen der Bibliothek Bibliotheksbenutzer müssten das Google-Formular ausfüllen, um die benötigten Bücherei-Artikel anzufordern. Bitte füllen Sie im Formular die erforderlichen Felder aus, einschließlich: Name der Person, die die Materialien ausleiht, Titel und Autor für jeden Artikel Verwenden Sie den Bibliothekskatalog, um nach den gewünschten Büchern zu suchen und auch, um zu überprüfen, ob die Bücher ausgeliehen sind. News from the ES Library Just a friendly reminder about book checkout and book return. Library Resources Library users would need to complete the Google Form to request the library items needed. In the form please complete the required fields including: name of the person checking out the materials, title and author for each item. Use the library catalog to search for the books you want and also to check to see if the books are checked out. Write down the book title, author and call number. Keep in mind that books on hold may not come back for a while. Then take that information and type it into the Google form. The library staff will process the request, checkout the materials or place holds or renew items and once the items are ready, they will be brought down to the “Materials Collection” area downstairs near the Welcome area of the Elementary School. Then an email will be sent to the person making the request notifying them that the items are ready to be picked up. Each request will have the name of the person requesting on top of the items. All items to be returned need to be deposited into the “Book Return” box that is now located in the same “Materials Collection” area. Here is a link to the Google Form. JFKS Latest Update (15.05.)

Neues aus der Oberschule Bitte klicken Sie hier für einen aktualisierten Plan für die High School. Schließfach-Reinigung Die Klassen 7-9 haben bereits ihre Lockers ausgeräumt und die Schülerinnen und Schüler, die diese Woche teilgenommen haben, haben ihre Schlösser abgegeben. Die 10. Klassen werden ihre Lockers nächsten Montag und Dienstag, 18-19.5. ausräumen und ihre Schlösser abgeben. Mai. Die Schüler der 11. Klasse haben bereits per E-Mail Informationen für das Leeren ihrer Schließfächer erhalten. Für Schülerinnen und Schüler der Klassen 7-11, die nicht in der Schule sind oder aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht zur Schule kommen können, werden in naher Zukunft Verfahren zur Abholung von Sachen organisiert. Locker Clean-out Grades 7-9 have already cleaned out their lockers and turned in their locks for those students who attended this week. 10th graders will clean-out their lockers and turn in their locks next Monday and Tuesday, May 18-19. Grade 11 students have already been emailed guidelines on how to empty their lockers going forward. Grade 12 students will have a forthcoming schedule concerning their lockers and deposit refund. For students in grades 7-11 who are not in school or will not be able to come to school due to various reasons, procedures to pick-up belongings will be created and shared with the community in the near future.

On Monday, we will meet with them to discuss final questions and hopefully share the finalized plan for the week of 26-29 May as early as Tuesday, 19 May with all the affected families via the homeroom teachers. Mittagessen auf GRÜN Diese Woche erhalten unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler der Grundschule Lunchboxen zum Mitnehmen mit warmem Essen. Es werden Plastikgabeln zur Verfügung stehen, aber wir ermutigen die Schülerinnen und Schüler, eine Gabel von zu Hause mitzubringen, um den Gebrauch von Plastik zu reduzieren.	Going GREEN with lunches This week, our Elementary School students will receive lunch boxes to-go with warm food. Plastic forks will be available but we encourage students to bring a fork from home to reduce our use of plastic.
Bevorstehende Feiertage Bitte denken Sie daran, dass die nächste Woche eine kurze Woche ist. Am Donnerstag und Freitag (21.-22. Mai) findet kein Unterricht auf dem Campus, kein Distance Learning und keine Notfallbetreuung statt. Ebenso ist am Montag (25. Mai) Memorial Day – ein amerikanischer Feiertag ohne Unterricht und ohne Notfallbetreuung.	Upcoming Holidays Please remember that next week is a short week. There will be no on-campus instruction, no distance learning and no emergency care on Thursday and Friday (May 21-22). Similarly, Monday (May 25) is Memorial Day with no instruction or emergency care.

Änderungen in der Schulleitung Mit dem kürzlichen Weggang von Brian Salzer möchten wir David Krupski ab dieser Woche bis zum Ende des Schuljahres 20/21 offiziell als unseren neuen amtierenden amerikanischen HS Principal vorstellen. Wir freuen uns auf die Zusammenarbeit im kommenden Schuljahr! Wir sind dabei, für das kommende Schuljahr einen kommissarischen Ersatz für die Stelle des amerikanischen Stellvertretenden Oberschulleiters auszuwählen. Darüber hinaus freuen wir uns, LaTyia Rolle als neue Grundschulleiterin der JFKS willkommen zu heißen, wie bereits im Schulbulletin vom Februar erwähnt. Sie bereitet sich eifrig darauf vor, im Juli mit ihrem Mann und ihren zwei Kindern von Sacramento, Kalifornien, nach Berlin umzuziehen. Wir hoffen, dass die Auswahlprozesse für die deutschen Schulleiterstellen der Grundschule und Oberschule im Herbst stattfinden wird. Bis dahin sind Jenny Hoenicke und Steffen Schulz weiterhin die amtierenden deutschen Schulleiter der Grund- bzw. Oberschule.	Administration Team Changes With the recent departure of Brian Salzer, we would like to officially introduce David Krupski as our new Acting American HS Principal as of this week until the end of school year 20/21. We look forward to working together in the coming school year! We are in the process of selecting an interim replacement for the HS American Assistant Principal position for the coming school year. Additionally, we are thrilled to welcome LaTyia Rolle as the new JFKS elementary principal as previously mentioned in the February school bulletin. She is eagerly preparing to move to Berlin from Sacramento, CA with her husband and two children in July. We are hopeful that both the HS and ES German principal selection processes will take place in the fall. Until then, Steffen Schulz and Jenny Hoenicke are continuing to serve as Acting German Principals of the HS and ES, respectively.

Nachricht von der Schulleitung Senatorin Scheeres informierte gestern die Öffentlichkeit über das nächste Schuljahr. Wie Sie vielleicht schon gehört haben, wird die Schule “normal” beginnen – für JFKS am Montag, den 17. August. Wir werden in allen Fächern zu normalen Klassengrößen und zum normalen Unterricht zurückkehren können. Hygienemaßnahmen wie häufiges Händewaschen und Lüften werden beibehalten, die Abstandsanforderungen von 1,50m nicht. In Fächern wie Sport und Musik werden wir jedoch engen Kontakt vermeiden und wann immer möglich nach draußen gehen. Die Schulen sind jedoch verpflichtet, einen Plan B für den Fall zu haben, dass die Schule oder Teile der Schule schließen müssen. Dieser Plan B beinhaltet einen wöchentlichen Online-Plan für die Schülerinnen und Schüler zu Hause, wobei die Lehrerinnen und Lehrer mindestens zweimal pro Woche mit den Schülerinnen und Schülern in Kontakt treten. Daher wird die Grundschule am Montag, dem 29. Juni, einen Workshop-Tag abhalten, um unsere Online-/ Distance Learning -Prozesse zu verbessern. Da sich verschiedene Klassenstufen zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten auf dem Campus befinden und um die Hygienemaßnahmen einzuhalten, werden die Zeugnisse am Ende des letzten regulären Schultages auf dem Campus wie folgt verteilt: — Eingangsklassen: an ihrem jeweiligen letzten Schultag in den Wochen vom 15. oder 22. Message from the Administration Senator Frau Scheeres informed the public yesterday about the next school year. As you may have already heard, school will start “normal” – for JFKS on Monday, August 17th. We will be able to go back to normal class sizes and instruction in all subjects. Hygienic measures such as frequent hand washing and open windows will continue, the distance requirements of 1,50m will not. In subjects such as Sport and Music we will, however, avoid close contact and go outside whenever possible. With that said, schools are required to have a plan B in case the school or sections of the school have to close. This plan B includes a weekly online plan for the students at home with the teachers checking in with the students at least twice a week. Therefore, the ES will have a Workshop Day on Monday, June 29 to improve our online/distance learning processes. Since different grade levels are on campus at different times and in order to adhere to hygiene measures, report cards will get distributed at the end of the last regular, on-campus school day as follows: — Entrance Classes: on their respective last day of school in the weeks of June 15 or 22. — Grade 1 and 5: Thursday, June 25 — Grade 4: Friday, June 26 — Grade 2 and 3: Tuesday, June 30 Click here to review the updated schedule for the last weeks of instruction of the elementary school. Musik auf dem Campus Am Freitag (12. Juni) werden Klarinettisten des Konzerthausorchesters auf unserem Campus sein. Oberschule: Schülerausweise Aufgrund der fortbestehenden Kontaktbeschränkungen und einzuhaltenden Abstandsregelungen im Rahmen der Maßnahmen zur Eindämmung der Corona-Pandemie ist davon auszugehen, dass bis zum Ende des laufenden Schuljahres 2019/20 keine Fotoaktionen zur Herstellung von Schülerausweisen im Scheckkartenformat stattfinden können. Aus diesem Anlass wird die Gültigkeit der bereits vorhandenen Schülerausweise ausnahmsweise bis zum Ende dieses Kalenderjahres (31.12.2020) automatisch verlängert. Sollte Ihr Kind dennoch einen neuen Schülerausweis brauchen, kommen Sie bitte mit einem Passfoto ins Sekretariat.	High School: Student IDs Due to the continuing contact restrictions and distance regulations to be observed as part of the measures to contain the corona pandemic, there will be no photo taken by the school photographer for the production of student IDs in the credit card format for the upcoming school year 2020-2021. For this reason, the validity of the existing student ID cards will be automatically valid without action until the end of this calendar year (31.12.2020). If for some reason a child needs a new student card, please come to the secretary with a passport photo.
