JFKS Latest Update (03.04.)

Nachricht von der Schulleitung:

Wir möchten dem Vorstand der Gesamtelternvertretung (Parent Council) dafür danken, dass Fragen und Bedenken der Eltern gesammelt wurden. Die Informationen, die an die Schulleitung weitergeleitet wurden waren sehr informativ, und wir werden sie in unsere weitere Planung einbeziehen.

An dieser Stelle möchten wir Ihnen, unserer Elterngemeinschaft, unsere aufrichtige Anerkennung aussprechen! Wir sind uns bewusst, dass Sie mit einer enormen Menge an Herausforderungen konfrontiert sind – von der Arbeit von zu Hause bis zur Unterstützung Ihrer Kinder in dieser neuen Ära des Fernunterrichts – und Sie tun Ihr Bestes!  

Wir hoffen, dass Sie sich in den nächsten zwei Wochen auf wichtige eigene Fürsorge konzentrieren können, um sich wieder aufzuladen und für die Herausforderungen bereit zu sein, die am 20. April, wenn die Schule wieder geöffnet ist, vor uns liegen.

Wenn sich in den Osterferien etwas an unserem Rückkehrdatum ändert, werden wir eine E-Mail an alle Eltern schicken und die Details auf der Website veröffentlichen. Message from the Administration:

We would like to thank the Parent Council Board for collecting questions and concerns from the parents. The information they shared with us was very informative and we will certainly include it in our further planning.

At this time, we would like to offer our sincere appreciation to you, our Parent Community! We recognize that you are dealing with a tremendous amount of challenges – from working from home to assisting your children in this new era of distance learning – and you are doing your best!  

We hope you are able to focus on important selfcare during the next two weeks in order to recharge and be ready for the challenges that lie ahead on April 20th when school is back in session.

If anything changes during Easter Break regarding our return-to-school date, we will send out an email to all parents and post on the website. Note that information can change at any given time, therefore, please check our website again on Sunday (April 19) before school is scheduled to open again to make sure you didn’t miss any updates.

Durchführung der Abschlussprüfungen, vergleichende Arbeiten

Heute sind wir durch die Senatsschulverwaltung informiert worden, dass die Abiturprüfungen unter Berücksichtigung des Infektionsschutzes nach den Osterferien stattfinden sollen. Dies gilt auch dann, wenn kein regulärer Schulbetrieb stattfindet. Folgende Dokumente für die Schüler/innen und Eltern, die von Abschlussprüfungen und vergleichenden Arbeiten betroffen sind, wurden uns zur Verfügung gestellt. Wir bitten um Kenntnisnahme.

 Die Mitglieder der JFKS-Sportabteilung bieten eine tägliche Trainingseinheit über Instagram an, die einfache und schnelle Übungen enthält, um aktiv zu bleiben. Alles was benötigt wird, ist Sie selbst, etwas Platz und eventuell eine Yogamatte. Die Übungen enthalten immer verschiedene Schwierigkeitsgrade, so dass jeder seine Fähigkeiten trainieren kann.  Besonders in den Osterferien ist es wichtig, die tägliche (Trainings-)Routine beizubehalten!

Stay Active

Members of the JFKS sports department decided to offer a daily workout session on Instagram, containing easy and quick exercises to stay active. All you need is yourself, some space and possibly a yoga mat. The exercises always contain different levels of difficulty so that everyone can work out regarding their abilities. Follow @jfksberlin_stay_active on Instagram to get all the info and activity!

Especially during the time of easter vacation it is important to maintain your daily (workout) routine!

Darin finden Sie eine Vielzahl von Artikeln, die von Schülern und Schülerinnen zu verschiedenen Themen der psychischen Gesundheit geschrieben wurden, die Ergebnisse der IDEAS-Umfrage zur psychischen Gesundheit und zwei Interviews mit Mrs. Gebhardt und Ms. Krull.

Obwohl wir nicht in der Lage sind, eine Gemeinschaft im physischen Sinne zu sein, wollen wir sozial miteinander verbunden bleiben. Wir ermutigen alle Schülerinnen und Schüler (und Eltern), die Artikel durchzulesen und sich mit Fragen oder Kommentaren an uns zu wenden.

JFKS Latest Update (27.03.)

Die Schüler/innen der Grundschule lernen weiterhin über Online-Plattformen und durch Arbeiten, die per E-Mail an die Eltern geschickt werden. Angesichts der Diskrepanz in der Technologie, die unseren jüngsten Schülern zur Verfügung steht, werden derzeit keine Noten für ihre Arbeit vergeben. Bitte setzen Sie die Arbeit als Bereicherungs-Unterricht fort und setzen Sie die Lernroutine fort, bis wir in die Schule zurückkehren können. 

Von den Schülern und Schülerinnen der Oberschule wird erwartet, dass sie Aufgaben und Projekte einreichen, und diese werden benotet. Die Schüler brauchen die Noten, um ihre Kenntnisse des Lehrplans zu bestätigen und um die Credits für den Abschluss zu erhalten. Die Lehrer werden gebeten, flexibel zu sein, wenn es um den Zugang der Schüler zur Technologie geht und ihre Fähigkeit, Arbeit zu erhalten und  innerhalb der Fristen zurückzugeben. Auch dies wird die Praxis sein, bis wir wieder in den Unterricht zurückkehren. 

Momentan ist eine Rückkehr in die Schule für den 20. April vorgesehen, aber dies wird weiterhin vom Coronavirus abhängen. Der Termin für die Rückkehr in die Schule wird vom Senat festgelegt.

From the Administration

Elementary school students are continuing to learn via online platforms and through work being sent through parent email. Given the discrepancy in technology available to our youngest students, grades will not be assigned for their work at this time. Please continue the work as enrichment education and to continue the learning routine until we can return to school. 

High School students are expected to submit assignments and projects and these will be graded. Students need the grades to confirm their knowledge of the curriculum and to receive credits toward graduation. Teachers are asked to be flexible with consideration to student’s access to technology and their ability to receive and return work within the deadlines. Again, this will be the practice until we return to classes. 

As of now, we are looking at a return to school on April 20, but this will all depend on the state of the coronavirus. The return to school date will be determined by the Senat.

Klassenfahrten und Kursfahrten

Auf Beschluss des Senats: Alle Schulausflüge und Austauschprogramme werden für den Rest des Schuljahres gestrichen. Die jeweiligen Organisatoren der Fahrten werden die Teilnehmer so schnell wie möglich kontaktieren. Unsere Lehrer sind sehr damit beschäftigt, den Fernunterricht einzurichten und die Arbeit für alle Schüler zu organisieren. Außerdem werden auch viele der Reisebüros und Fluggesellschaften mit Anfragen überhäuft. Es wird einige Zeit dauern, um alle Antworten zu erhalten. Wir wissen Ihre Geduld zu schätzen in Bezug auf weitere Einzelheiten und Rückerstattungen.

School Trips

Per the decision of the Senat:  All school trips and exchanges are canceled for the remainder of the school year. The respective organizers of the trips will contact participants as soon as possible. Our teachers are very busy setting up distance learning and organizing work for all students. Additionally,  many of the travel agencies and airlines are overwhelmed with requests as well. It will take some time to get all the answers. We appreciate your patience in regards to requesting further details and reimbursements, for example.

Grundschule: Curriculum-Koordinator 

Liebe Eltern,

Zunächst einmal vielen Dank für all Ihre harte Arbeit, Ihre Geduld und Ihre Flexibilität in der ver- gangenen Woche.  Ich bin sicher, dass Ihre E-Mail mit Nachrichten und Aufgaben von zahlreichen Lehrern überflutet wurde. Viele Websites und Lernplattformen haben Lehrern und Schülern freien Zugang zu ihren Diensten geboten, so dass Sie vielleicht auch E-Mails erhalten haben, in denen Sie aufgefordert wurden, sich anzumelden und Konten einzurichten.  Wir wissen, dass es entmutigend sein kann, mit allem Schritt zu halten, was Ihre Kinder tun müssen. Dies ist eine neue Herausforderung für uns alle, und wir wissen, dass jeder das Beste tut, um sich durch diese neue Herausforderung zu navigieren. Die Lehrer an der JFKS werden ihren Ansatz für das Online-Lernen weiter überarbeiten und einen Weg finden, wie wir all am besten vorankommen.  

Die Schüler/innen versäumen derzeit mehr als drei Wochen Unterricht. Dies ist eine lange Zeit und einer Menge verpasster Lerngelegenheiten, die für die Schülerinnen und Schüler unerlässlich sind, um Fortschritte zu machen und die notwendigen Lernziele ihrer Klassenstufe zu erreichen.  Deshalb halten es die Verwaltung und die Lehrer für wichtig, das Lernen so weit wie möglich aufrechtzuerhalten. Das Ziel der Übermittlung von Aufgaben ist nicht, die Familien zu überfordern, sondern den Unterricht zu replizieren, der stattgefunden hätte. Das Online- Lernen kann das reiche Erfahrungslernen, das in der Schule stattfindet, nicht ersetzen, aber es gibt auch einige andere positive Aspekte, die aus dieser Situation hervorgehen.  Viele Schülerinnen und Schüler lernen (durch einige Kämpfe), sich Ziele zu setzen, ihre Zeit auszugleichen, im Internet zu navigieren und unabhängige Projekte zu entwickeln. Sie lernen auch, dass das Leben manchmal beschließt, sie in neue Richtungen zu führen, die sie nicht vorhatten, und dass sie sich an diese neuen Umgebungen anpassen müssen. Wir sind beeindruckt, wie gut sich die Schülerinnen und Schüler an diese neuen Umgebungen anpassen konnten!

Wir sind uns jedoch auch bewusst, dass jede Familiensituation anders ist und dass es Umstände geben kann, unter denen es nicht möglich ist, einige der von den Lehrern gesetzten Ziele zu erreichen.  Das ist uns bewusst und auch in Ordnung. Wir als Erwachsene passen uns an diese neue Realität an, und jeder muss das tun, was für seine eigene Familie am besten funktioniert. Obwohl die Erfüllung der Aufgaben sehr zu empfehlen ist, verstehen wir, dass dies nicht immer möglich ist. Auf der Grundlage der Empfehlungen der Schulleitung und um jeglichen Druck abzuschwächen, möchten wir Ihnen versichern, dass die Schulaufgaben an dieser Stelle empfohlen, aber nicht erforderlich sind.  Außerdem sind die Fälligkeitstermine flexibel und die Aufgaben werden nicht zensiert (sofern nicht ausdrücklich angegeben). Wie bereits gesagt, die Aufgaben sind nur eine Möglichkeit, die Schüler/innen in diesen schwierigen Zeiten zu beschäftigen, sie weiterhin zum Arbeiten und Lernen anzuleiten.  

Konzentrieren wir uns darauf, was für unsere Familie am besten ist, und bleiben wir in dieser stressigen Situation ruhig.  Lassen Sie uns als Gemeinschaft zusammenkommen, um erfolgreich durch diese unerforschten Gewässer zu navigieren. Lassen Sie uns neue Wege finden, um unsere Kinder zum Lernen und Wachsen zu inspirieren.  Genießen Sie die Zeit, die Sie zu Hause mit Ihrer Familie haben, und bleiben Sie gesund!

Elementary School: Curriculum Coordinator

Dear Parents,

First of all, thank you so much for all of your hard work, patience, and flexibility this past week.  I’m sure your email was flooded with emails and assignments from numerous teachers. Many websites and learning platforms have offered teachers and students free access to their services, so you may also have received emails asking you to sign up and create accounts.  We know that keeping up with everything your children need to do can seem daunting. This is a new challenge for all of us and we realize that everyone is doing the best they can to navigate through this new challenge. The teachers at JFKS will continue to revise their approach to online learning and figure out the best way to move forward.  

The students will currently be missing over three weeks of instruction.  This time adds up to a lot of missed learning opportunities that are essential for students to progress and master the necessary learning goals of their grade level.  This is why the administration and teachers feel it is important to keep the learning going as much as possible. The goal of sending assignments is not intended to overwhelm families, but to replicate the instruction that would have taken place.  Online learning can’t replace the rich experiential learning that happens in the school, but there are some other positives that are coming out of this situation as well. Many students are learning (through some struggles) to set goals, balance their time, navigate the internet, and develop independent projects.  They are also learning that sometimes life decides to take them in new directions they weren’t intending to go and that they must adapt to these new environments. We have been impressed with how well the students have been able to adapt!

However, we also realize that every family is different and there may be circumstances where reaching some of the goals put forth by the teachers is not possible.  This is okay and expected. We, as adults, are adapting and adjusting to this new reality and everyone needs to do what works best for their own families. Although the completion of the assignments is highly recommended, we understand that this is not always possible. Based on the recommendations of the administration and in order to alleviate any pressure, we would like to reassure you that at this point the assignments are recommended, but not required.  Additionally, the due dates are flexible and the remote assignments will not be graded (unless specifically stated).  Again, the assignments are merely a way to keep students engaged, working, and learning throughout these difficult times.  

Let us focus on what is best for our family and staying calm through this stressful situation.  Let us come together as a community in order to successfully navigate these uncharted waters. Let us find new ways of inspiring our children to learn and grow.  Enjoy the time that you have at home with your family and stay healthy!

Grundschule: Kontaktlehrerin

Liebe Gemeinschaft der John F. Kennedy Schule,

natürlich sollte diese kleine Rede eigentlich mündlich stattfinden. Ms Faber und ich hatten sie längst geplant. Doch nun ist alles anders… Das Folgende sollte jedoch jetzt gesagt werden, statt zu warten. Die meisten von Ihnen kennen mich als eine Lehrerin der unteren Grundschulklassen. Zur Zeit unterrichte ich die 3b.

Seit Kurzem bin ich die Kontaktlehrerin für unsere Schüler und Schülerinnen der Grundschule. Das bedeutet, ich bin eine der Lehrerinnen, an die sich Kinder im Besonderen wenden können, wenn sie beispielsweise Mediation oder andere Unterstützung wünschen. Die Hauptaufgaben einer Kontaktlehrerin beziehen sich auf die Erhaltung eines gesunden und freundlichen Schulklimas. Wir achten darauf, dass es den Kindern emotional und körperlich gut geht. Dadurch verhindern wir nach Möglichkeit den Griff zu schädlichen Substanzen, verhindern auch Gewalt gegen sich selbst und andere, und sind aktiv involviert in den Bereich des sozialen Lernens. Ich werde eng mit Ms Faber zusammen- arbeiten. Unseren bereits ausgearbeiteten Plan werden wir nach der Schulöffnung vorstellen und umsetzen.

Nun hat uns also ein kleiner aber mächtiger Virus dazwischengefunkt und alles lahmgelegt. Gerade jetzt sollten die Schülerinnen und Schüler jedoch die Möglichkeit haben, sich an einen Erwachsenen außerhalb der Familie zu wenden. Es wäre schön, wenn Sie das Ihrem Kind gestatten könnten, falls es nötig ist. Für die Kinder kann es aussehen, als hätten wir gerade keine Schule. Doch wir haben eine! Und sie nutzt, so höre ich, die Möglichkeiten, ihre Ausdrucksformen von Unterstützung, Dankbarkeit und Miteinander zu perfektionieren. Was wir bisher durch ein freundliches Lächeln, eine kleine Geste, einen netten Blick oder den Small Talk am Lunch Counter vermitteln konnten, müssen wir nun etwas mühsamer in geschriebene Worte fassen, wenn wir die starke Gemeinschaft bleiben möchten, die wir immer waren.

Bitte teilen Sie Ihren Kindern mit, dass sie mich kontaktieren können, wenn es gerade ein bisschen abwärts läuft. Dies geht direkt per Email, oder wenn Ihr Kind etwas auf ein Papier schreibt, Sie es fotografieren und es mir dann per Email schicken. Auch Zeichnungen können Wörter sein. Ich danke Ihnen herzlich dafür, dass Sie dies an Ihre Kinder weiterleiten.

Elementary School: Contact Teacher

Dear JFKS Community,

Of course, this little speech was supposed to happen face-to-face, but now is probably a good moment to send it out to you. Most of you know me as a teacher of lower elementary school, now teaching 3rd grade.

Recently, I have also taken on the position of contact teacher for our Elementary School students. This means I am one of the teaching staff a student can approach, when they need some sort or mediation or support. The main job of a contact teacher is to help create a friendly and fruitful learning environment for the students, to keep an eye on the students’ physical and emotional health, prevent substance abuse through early intervention, to mediate in cases of conflict and thereby prevent violence against self and others, etc. I will be working closely together with Ms Faber, and we actually had worked out a plan, which is now waiting to be put into place once we return to school.

However, a tiny little virus has managed to shut us all down, and right at this time, a contact teacher

might come in handy, even when it seems like there is no school. There is a school! As far as I am hearing from others, it is immensely supportive. This is a great time to work on our finetuning of appreciation, gratitude, support, and care. What we used to express through a smile, a little gesture, or a friendly small talk at the lunch counter, must now be put into written words in order for us to reach out.

Please tell your children that they can contact me if they are struggling with this situation. They can write a note by hand, you take a picture of it and send it to my email address. Or they can write an email directly, if you are willing to let them do so. Drawing a picture is another way to contact me.

Der Senat hat die Anforderungen für Familien, die die Notfallbetreuung beanspruchen können, geändert (Link hier). Es ist dringend notwendig, dass Eltern ihre Kinder vorher anmelden, damit wir die Lehrkräfte und Horterzieher entsprechend der Nachfrage  einteilen können.

Emergency Care

The Senat has changed the requirements for families qualifying for emergency care (Link here).  It is extremely important that parents sign up their children so we can schedule teachers and Hort staff to be on duty according to demand.

Terminverlegung aller Prüfungen 

Auf Grund der aktuellen Entwicklungen im Zusammenhang mit der Corona-Pandemie sind weitreichende Einschränkungen zur Vermeidung sozialer Kontakte unabdingbar. Vor diesem Hintergrund sehen wir uns gezwungen, alle Prüfungen zum Mittleren Schulabschluss und zum Abitur, deren Termine vor den Osterferien angesetzt waren, abzusagen und auf einen späteren Termin zu verschieben.

Postponement of all exams

Due to the latest developments of the Corona-pandemic, we have been ordered to avoid all social contacts and the Senat and JFKS have decided to postpone all exams for the MSA and Abitur that were scheduled before the Easter break until a later date.

JFKS Latest Update (20.03)

Liebe Eltern, 

um die Flut der Informationen an die Eltern und die JFKS Community etwas einzudämmen, wird die Schulleitung ab jetzt wie folgt kommunizieren:

  • Ein kurzes Bulletin oder Communiqué (Latest Update) wird auf der Webseite der Schule (unter News) jeden Mittwoch und Freitag veröffentlicht. Wir bitten alle Eltern, die Webseite an diesen Tagen aufzurufen, da die Information nicht per E-Mail rausgeschickt wird.
  • Die Schulleitung wird weiterhin dringende Nachrichten, die die JFKS Community sofort bzw. Zeitnah betreffen, per E-Mail verschicken.

MSA Prüfungen Klasse 10

Wie bereits mitgeteilt, sind die schriftlichen MSA-Prüfungen verschoben worden. Nach heutigem Stand ist einer der neuen Termine der 25. Mai, also Memorial-Day, ein schulfreier Tag an der JFKS. Da es sich hierbei um einen zentralen Prüfungstermin handelt, besteht an diesem Tag Anwesenheitspflicht. In der Vergangenheit lag fast jedes Jahr ein Nachschreibtermin des Abiturs auf dem Memorial-Day, auch hier mussten die Schüler(innen) erscheinen. Wir bitten Sie, das in Ihrer Planung zu berücksichtigen.

  • Deutsch – 13. Mai
  • Mathematik – 25. Mai
  • Englisch – 27. Mai

MSA Exams for Grade 10

As already announced, the written MSA exams have been postponed. As of today, one of the new dates is May 25, Memorial Day, which is a school-holiday at JFKS. Since this is a central exam date, attendance is mandatory on this day. In the past, almost every year there was a make-up exam for the Abitur scheduled on Memorial Day, and the students had to attend as well. We ask you to take this into account in your planning.

  • German –  13 May
  • Math – 25 May
  • English – 27 May
High School Prüfungen und Präsentationen

Die geplanten Präsentationen für die 5. PK, die letzten MSA Präsentationen und die Präsentationen für den AP Seminar Kurs fallen aus. Die neuen Termine werden verkündet, wenn die Schule wieder normal beginnt. 

Der heutige Stand der Dinge ist, dass die schriftlichen Prüfungen wie geplant stattfinden:

High School Exams and Presentations

We need to inform you that all scheduled presentation exams will be cancelled. This encompasses 5. PK presentations, the remaining MSA presentations and the presentations of the AP seminar course. The new dates will be announced when we are all back in school.

As of right now, all WRITTEN exams will take place as scheduled:

CLASS OF 2020: GRADUATION CEREMONY

Die Freie Universität hat die Graduation- Zeremonie, die für den 25.6. im Max-Kade- Auditorium geplant war, abgesagt. Uns ist bekannt, dass viele unserer Schüler/innen der 12. Klasse Familienmitglieder haben, die für diesen Anlass nach Berlin reisen. Die Schulleitung ist dabei, andere Möglichkeiten in Betracht zu ziehen. Wir werden alle Familien der 12. Klasse und die JFKS Community informieren, sobald wir weitere Informationen haben.  

CLASS OF 2020: GRADUATION CEREMONY

The Freie Universität has canceled the Graduation Ceremony which was scheduled to take place at the Max-Kade-Auditorium on June 25th. We are aware that many of our graduates have family members traveling to Berlin for this event. The administration is working on alternative options. We will notify the families of our 12th graders and the JFKS community as soon as we have more information.
Fernlernen – Hilfreiche Ideen um Routine einzuhalten

Uns ist bewusst, dass viele Eltern zu Hause fantastische Arbeit leisten, vor allem in Bezug auf von zu Hause arbeiten, die Kinder unterstützen und einkaufen und Hausarbeiten erledigen. Jede Familie hat ihre eigenen Herausforderungen und wir wollen Sie wissen lassen, dass unsere Lehrkräfte und Angestellten Ihre Bemühungen und Unterstützung schätzt. Wir wissen, dass es viele Information online gibt, aber möchten einige hilfreiche Tipps mit allen Eltern teilen. Diese Zusammenfassung kommt aus einem Artikel des TIME Magazins vom 15.3.2020.

Die Schulschließungen haben Auswirkungen für viele Eltern, die jetzt Wege suchen, um ihren Kindern den Übergang ins ‘zu Hause bleiben’ zu erleichtern. Es ist eine Sache, die Kinder am Wochenende den ganzen Tag zu bespaßen. Es ist etwas anderen, dies sieben Tage in der Woche für eine unbegrenzte Zeit zu tun. Das Geheimnis ist was Schulen sehr gut wissen: Halten Sie eine Routine ein. Kinder sind gewohnt, einen (Stunden-) Plan einzuhalten, somit ist es hilfreich, wenn auch zu Hause ein Plan aufgestellt wird. Es ist wesentlich einfacher als Sie vielleicht denken. Nehmen Sie einen Stift, Papier und planen Sie, wie die nächsten paar Tage bei Ihnen zu Hause aussehen. Das Ziel ist, die Kinder zu beschäftigen und, dass die Kinder weiterhin lernen während Sie andere Sachen erledigen können. 

Beginnen Sie mit der Schulroutine. Nehmen Sie diese als Rahmenplan und berücksichtigen Sie die bisherige Routine des Kindes: 

  • Wann isst das Kinder normalerweise Frühstück? Snack? Lunch?
  • Wann ist Pause?
  • Untergliedern Sie den Tag in kleine Abschnitte, genau wie die Schule es mit den verschiedenen Unterrichtsfächern tut.
  • Wenn Ihr Kind Schulaufgaben hat, arbeitet es besser am Morgen oder am Nachmittag?

Lesen und Pausen

Viele Studien belegen den Stellenwert des Lesens. Den ganzen Tag zu Hause sein hat die Möglichkeit, diese Gewohnheit noch zu steigern. 15-20 Minuten pro Tag ist ein toller Start. Vielleicht hilft es, diese Lesezeiten verschieden zu strukturieren: Eltern lesen laut vor, Kind liest laut vor, und die Familie liest jeder für sich. Und wenn Ihr Kind eine Lesezeit verlängern möchte, machen Sie sich um die Tagesplan keine Sorgen. Zu viel lesen gibt es nicht und Sie können immer eine geplante Aktivität auf den nächsten Tag verlegen. Wenn möglich, planen Sie zwei bis drei Pausen pro Tag ein, an denen Ihr Kind draußen ist. Bedenken Sie, dass Hofpausen Teil der Schultags sind und Kinder ein bisschen Kälte und ein bisschen Regen gewohnt sind! Bitte denken Sie an die allgemeinen Regeln, die dezeit für uns alle gelten und minimieren Sie den Kontakt zu anderen Personen!

We are aware of some of the fantastic jobs our parents are doing at home, balancing working from home, supporting their children and keeping up with groceries and housework. Every family is facing different challenges and we would like to let you know that our teachers and staff appreciate your efforts and support. We know there is an abundance of information online, yet, we would like to share this short summary of helpful tips for parents from a TIME magazine article (15.3.2020):

The widespread school closures have sent a ripple effect into parent communities as many scramble to find ways to smoothly transition kids into at-home life. It’s one thing to entertain them all day on the weekends. It’s another when you have seven days a week to fill for an indefinite period of time. The secret is one that schools know well: Make a routine. Kids are used to following a schedule, so making a blueprint for the day will help everything fall into place. It’s a lot easier than you might think. Grab a pen, paper and actually map out how the days will look at home. The goal is to keep kids busy and learning while allowing you to get other things done too.

Start with their school routine. Use school as the framework and honor what had been your child’s routine:

  • When are they used to having breakfast? Snack? Lunch?
  • When is recess?
  • Break the day into small chunks much like school does with subjects.
  • If your child has assigned schoolwork, do they work best in the morning or afternoon?

Reading and Recess

Study after study shows the importance of reading. Being home all day is a great chance to increase that habit. Put in reading blocks. Fifteen to 20 minutes a day is a great place to start. Consider structuring this reading block in a few different ways: parent reads aloud, child reads aloud, and family silent reading time. And if your child wants to extend a reading period, don’t worry too much about messing up the schedule. There’s no such thing as too much reading, and you can always save a planned activity for the next day. If possible, add in two to three recess times for your child to be outside. Remember that recess time is a part of school life and kids are used to a little cold and a little rain. Please remember the general rules that are currently applying to all of us and limit the contact to other people.

Für die Oberschüler/innen wird keine Zwischenzeugnisse für das 3. Quartal geben. Die Wertungen und Punkte werden in die Zensur für das zweite Semester einfließen.

Registration Forms für die Klassenstufen 7-10 müssen bis zum 30. März abgegeben werden. Bitte vergewissern Sie sich, dass die Klasse angegeben ist. REMINDERS

There will be no 3rd quarter report cards for high school students. The scores and points will be included in the second semester grade.

Registration forms for grades 7 -10 have to be turned in by March 30th at the latest. Make sure you marked the class section. In front of our HS secretaries offices are four boxes for the grade levels. Please put the registration forms in these boxes.  If you prefer to send it via email, please send it to . Class of 2020: Graduation Ceremony

The Freie Universität has canceled the Graduation Ceremony which was scheduled to take place at the Max-Kade-Auditorium on June 25th.

We are aware that many of our graduates have family members traveling to Berlin for this event. The administration is working on alternative options. We will notify the families of our 12th graders and the JFKS community as soon as we have more information,

Update from Hort (18.03.)

The administration would like to share the message that went to all parents of students enrolled in Hort. See message below. 

Die Schulleitung möchte diesen Brief teilen, der heute an alle Eltern von Kindern im Hort geschickt wurde. Siehe Nachricht unten.

Dear parents,

Another colleague from the after-school (Hort) care sector tested positive for Covid-19. As instructed by the Health Department, all related persons were informed, relevant data was forwarded to the Health Department and the ordered measures were taken. If you have not been informed, then you and your children are not affected.

The Health Office has expressly pointed out that the greatest help in the current situation is to remain as calm as possible and to avoid all unnecessary social contacts. Please avoid spreading rumors and assumptions in the social media. If you feel that you need clarification on a matter related to the after-school care or school, please contact us by mail and we will try to clarify the situation as soon as possible.

All parents who work in fields that are categorized as relevant to the system by the Senate and who have registered a legitimate need for emergency care for their children, will receive the necessary information today.

Liebe Eltern,

eine weitere Kollegin aus dem Hortbereich wurde positiv auf Covid-19 getestet. Alle im Zusammenhang damit stehenden Personen wurden nach Anweisung des Gesundheitsamtes informiert, die entsprechenden Daten an das Gesundheitsamt weitergeleitet und die angeordneten Maßnahmen wurden ergriffen. Solltet Ihr nicht informiert worden sein, dann seid Ihr und Eure Kinder nicht betroffen.

Das Gesundheitsamt hat ausdrücklich darauf hingewiesen, dass die größte Hilfe in der derzeitigen Situation ist, so ruhig wie möglich zu bleiben und alle unnötigen Sozialkontakte zu vermeiden.

Bitte vermeidet die Verbreitung von Gerüchten und Vermutungen in den sozialen Medien. Wenn Ihr das Gefühl habt, dass Ihr Klärung zu einem im Zusammenhang mit dem Hort oder der Schule stehenden Sachverhalt benötigt kontaktiert uns per Mail und wir bemühen uns so schnell wie möglich um Klärung.
