The 5th Grade Music Core Program combines General Music Class taught once a week by an ES Music specialist implementing the Core Music Curriculum, and Applied Music Class / Music Elective (Beginners Band or Orchestra, Advanced Strings or Rotation) also taught once a week by Band and Orchestra Directors or an additional Music Specialist. The Applied Music Class is designed to apply the Core Music Curriculum through Ensemble Music Experience and gives the students the opportunity to learn an instrument. Instruments and lessons are provided by the school during 5th grade, afterwards students need to obtain their own instruments and take lessons outside of school if they wish to continue.
In addition to the Core Program there are Music Activities as part of the 5th Grade Activities program – Advanced Band or Orchestra for more experienced players and 5th Grade Choir. The Jazz Band (5th-8th Grade) and the Kammerchor (3rd-6th Grade) are two additional music activities for students in 5th grade.
